What the installer does
- Detects your system. macOS Apple silicon, Linux (x86_64 or arm64, glibc or musl), or Windows x86_64.
- Reads the release manifest.
releases/latest.json, so you always get the current stable build unless you pin one. - Downloads the matching bundle and checks its SHA 256 against the manifest before touching anything.
- Installs it. macOS and Linux unpack under
~/.venutian, withcurrentpointed at the new version. Windows unpacks the portable build to%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Venutianwith no administrator prompt. If a release ships the NSIS installer instead, it runs silently (/S /D=<dir>) and asks for administrator approval once. - Puts
venutianon your PATH and installs the update notifier. It adds one line to your shell profile only if it is not already there, tells you which file it touched, and prints one paragraph explaining what the notifier does.

Updates
Venutian checks venutian.org once a day for new releases and libraries and tells you here. It sends nothing about you. Turn it off with one command.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
venutian-notifier status |
Shows the installed version, the last check, and what is waiting. |
venutian-notifier check --now |
Checks immediately and prints the result. |
venutian-notifier off |
Turns the daily check off. |
venutian-notifier on |
Turns the daily check back on. |
venutian-notifier desktop on |

To install without the notifier at all, set VENUTIAN_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1 first. On Windows use setx VENUTIAN_NO_UPDATE_CHECK 1.
Upgrade
Run the same install command again.
curl -fsSL https://venutian.org/install.sh | sh
irm https://venutian.org/install.ps1 | iex
Downloaded a file, or used a package manager?
The notify commands install only the wrapper and the notifier, around the venutian you already have.
curl -fsSL https://venutian.org/notify.sh | sh
irm https://venutian.org/notify.ps1 | iex
Leave your email or turn on push here, and releases, library updates, and advisories reach you there as well.
