Basics

What is Venutian?

A sovereign, self hosted programming language that reads like English. It owns its grammar, bytecode, and virtual machine end to end, and its native compiler meets clang at O2 cycle for cycle on fib(30). Start with the language page or Why Venutian.

Is it free?

Yes, to download, install, and run. Venutian is proprietary and closed source. You hold a license to it, and it is distributed first party from this site. The full terms are on the license page.

Which systems does it run on?

macOS on Apple silicon, Linux on x86_64 and arm64, and Windows on x86_64. One command installs it on each. See the download page for the exact commands and what the installer does.

How fast is it?

On fib(30), Venutian's native compiler meets clang at O2 cycle for cycle, and is faster in wall time. Every benchmark stays within 7 percent of clang. The full table, the method, and the source line behind every number are on the performance page.

Install and updates

Does it need Python?

No. A shipped venutian binary runs standalone, and nothing you install or run depends on Python being present.

How do updates work, and can I turn them off?

The installer sets up a small notifier that checks the release and package feeds once a day and prints a one line upgrade command in your terminal when something is new. It is on by default and announced at install. Turn it off with venutian-notifier off, or set VENUTIAN_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1 (setx VENUTIAN_NO_UPDATE_CHECK 1 on Windows) before installing. Full detail is on the download page.

What data does the update check send?

Nothing about you. It reads a public, static feed and compares version numbers locally. No identifier, no IP address, and no usage data leaves your machine as part of that check. The full account is on the privacy page.

How do I install packages?

Every one of the 113 standard packages ships with Venutian; name it with the use word and it is yours, no separate install. For packages beyond the standard library, venutian package install reads a local path or archive, writes a content hashed lockfile, and verifies against it on demand. See the package manager page for the full command set.

Is there an editor extension?

Yes. Venutian Studio and editor support for VS Code, Neovim, Zed, and Helix are covered on the tooling page, with syntax highlighting, the language server, and real setup steps for each.

The project

What is Project Mirage?

Project Mirage is Venutian's education project. Its first release is SR500, a 502 million parameter mathematics tutor with no attention layers anywhere, built entirely in Venutian, scoring 92.66 percent on GSM8K paired with its verifier. Read the full story on the Mirage page.

How do I report a security issue?

Through the contact on the security page, not a public report. It also carries our security.txt and the current advisories, with severity, affected versions, and the fixed version for each.
